Spring Mini Sessions: Salem, Oregon Photographer

The original date for my Spring Mini Sessions was a total bust, it rained and it poured so we re-scheduled for this past weekend.  Again the weather forecast wasn’t too promising and it threatened rain but it stayed dry and the soft overcast lighting was a bonus.  Thanks to my Spring Mini Session families for being flexible during the rainy season, I think the wait was worth it!

We met a local cherry orchard in Dallas and while the cherry trees were mostly done blooming it was still a nice location with beautiful light and some pretty yellow spring flowers.  Each family had about 15 minutes of time which worked perfectly for all the toddlers involved.  In fact two of them told me they were all done right around the 15 minute mark…perfect timing!  If you have a 2-3 year old with a short attention span (which let’s face it…is pretty much every toddler!) Mini Sessions are a great option for an updated family portrait.

I enjoyed the variety of sessions I photographed in just a little over an hour…a family with a newborn and toddler, a family with a toddler and baby on the way, a three year old, and finally a mom and daughter duo.

I will be doing another set of Mini Sessions in early summer, sign up for my Newsletter (the tab is on the upper left corner) or send me a message asking to be put on my email list to be the first to know the dates and times when the next set of Mini Sessions is scheduled.

First Communion: Salem, Oregon Child Photographer

I met Mckenna and her Mom for some First Communion and spring photos last week on a pretty spring day by the capitol.  Mckenna arrived in her beautiful white dress and we took some photos inside the nearly empty church to celebrate her First Communion which will be taking place very soon.  I brought along my portable studio lighting which worked out really well and we were able to get some dramatic lighting.

After we got all the photos we needed in the church we headed across the street to the cherry blossoms by the capitol building.  We weren’t outside five minutes before Mckenna swapped her white dress for a more casual outfit with some saucy red boots!  Changing her outfit brought out the real Mckenna and she was like a different kid…a very fun loving and silly girl who really let her true self shine through.

It’s a pleasure photographing school aged kids, once they get comfortable in front of the camera they really open up and it makes for some really great portraits.  First CommunionFirst CommunionSpring Communionnight and dayspring girl in meadow

Winter Portraits: Salem, Oregon Photographer

February isn’t exactly the first month that comes to mind when thinking about outdoor portraits but even during this chilly season when very little is blooming beautiful outdoor portraits are possible.  I probably wouldn’t bring really young children outdoors quite yet (at least not without several layers of clothing!) but Mckenna and Kayla are (newly) 6 and (almost) 8 and did just fine.  We alternated between the girls at each location and they swapped in and out of their winter coats more times then I can count which kept them warm enough to be cooperative!  We used the same location as last year, though last year we waited a little later so there was a lot more blooming.  Fun to see how the girls have grown and what a difference a month or two can make in a location!

Kayla is probably one of my very favorite subjects to photograph, I’m almost positive that she is going to grow up to be one of those people who just can’t take a bad picture!  She makes my job so easy it’s ridiculous.  I’ve been joking with her that I’m going to have her come along on every session I do with kids to have her show them how it’s done because she has the art of posing and good eye contact with the camera down.  She’s quite a little ham but I love it!

Mckenna is the oldest of the three girls (littlest sister had her turn last fall!) and is excited to celebrate her 8th birthday with a Disney’s Brave party really soon.  She has gorgeous long hair and got the hang of the “model pose” I showed her in record time.  Girls this age are a lot of fun to photograph since they usually think posing is fun and they aren’t quite at the age where they are self conscious about what they look like and their true personality really shines through.

If you’ve been putting off your child’s “birthday portrait” because you’re worried about the weather or don’t think that the scrubby bare trees make for very attractive photos it’s worth reconsidering.  Even overcast February days have good portrait potential and as an added bonus the park is pretty empty of people to dodge!
